United Way of Portage Co. is looking for Reading Role Models

United Way of Portage County’s Reading Role Model program currently reaches 6 school districts in Portage Co.  This program is scheduled one ½ hour reading at each school district once a month throughout the school year.  This program has been well received for the past 4 years and has been going strong and expanding to new school districts each year thanks to our volunteer readers who dedicate their time to share their love of reading to Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms.  Currently most of my readers work, so their time for travel is quite limited although thankfully many of their employers allow them to volunteer their time during work hours as many of these companies are long time supporters of United Way of Portage Co.

I have two school districts that I’m having a difficult time finding readers for (Suffield Elementary and Windham Elementary) as these two schools are a little further outside the area, many of the people who work in Kent/Ravenna aren’t able to take the time for the distance aside from the ½ reading time.  I wanted to reach out to the Portage County. Retired Teachers Association in hopes that I may be able to acquire volunteer readers for this important program.

NEOMED PROCTORS NEEDED

Jeane Nolte, who is in charge of PCRTA’s NEOMED Proctoring Program is looking for more members who are willing to proctor tests for the medical and pharmacy students at NEOMED.

Proctors work in groups of two or three along with some full-time NEOMED staff to help monitor the students as they take tests. Most of the tests are taken on computers, but you don’t have to be computer savvy to proctor.

There are NEOMED tech people on hand to assist. You will receive a proctor training session before you begin to proctor. Call Jean Nolte for more information at 330-650-0110 or see her at the luncheon meeting.

Mentors Needed for Empowering People in Connection

in Ravenna  03-08-2017

About 20 students from grades 7-11 in the Ravenna School District take part in a bi-monthly mentoring program where adults volunteer as mentors and engage in various activities with the students. In a group mentoring environment, participants engage in team building, a community GiveBack project, literacy activities, and field trips to local businesses and colleges to learn about various academic and career options.

“The mentors assist the mentees in developing critical thinking and analytic problem-solving skills, communication and collaboration, and the kids work on creating SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relative and Timely)” said Amy Adams, Community Action Council director of youth and school-based services. “Character building is a core focus, so they work with the kids on being honest and having integrity and keeping commitments.”

For more information on becoming a mentor, contact Huth at 330-296-9679 ext. 3106.

National Youth Advocate Program Tallmadge 06-26-17

I am writing on behalf of the National Youth Advocate Program Tallmadge. As you may be aware, there are nearly 500,000 youth in the foster care system. With circumstances such as the opioid epidemic and neglect, that number is significantly increasing. Foster Parenting with NYAP might be YOUR OPPORTUNITY to be the loving family that so many children have been longing to meet. NYAP Tallmadge services Summit County, Trumbull County, Columbiana County, Mahoning County, Portage County, Ashtabula, etc. Our goal is to be the best advocates for our most vulnerable population, the children.

It would be an honor and privilege to speak to your members in regards to foster parenting. I simply would like to spread the word for a worthy cause and do good work. There are no fees to becoming a foster parent and there is no financial commitment after becoming a foster parent. NYAP provides competitive per diems to provide for our youth’s needs in addition to 24 hour support. We believe that speaking with area associations will open up good homes for our youth in care, providing them with a lifetime of love and support. Foster care awareness is unparalleled. We believe that speaking and informing community members on the subject provides the knowledge and the inspirational boost that potential foster parents might need.

I hope that you will consider my proposal. If you would prefer to just have marketing materials to distribute at this time or if you have a specific engagement that you would like us to attend and speak briefly about foster care, please let me know. We would be happy to fulfill that request. If you have any questions, I can be reached at 330-814-3792 or at ctownsend@nyap. We look forward to connecting with you.

Warmest Regards,

Proofreaders needed at Kent Roosevelt!  02-21-2016

I am currently a teacher at Theodore Roosevelt High School and am looking for some classroom volunteers to assist my seniors with proofreading entries in a portfolio.

Currently our seniors in the Teaching Professions program complete a portfolio to qualify for college credit.  The portfolio is comprised of 24 entries as well as pictures that evidence best teaching practices.  These entries are based off of ODE’s Teaching Professions portfolio standards and are graded by a rubric also given by ODE.

I am looking to try something new this year, incorporating volunteers to assist students in proofing their work.  Would there be a group of volunteers willing to come to Roosevelt during the month of March?  Ideally, I would like to set one day from the hours of

12 – 2 to run a proofreading boot camp.

If you could please let me know who I should contact to pursue this idea, I would appreciate it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Paid Tutors Needed!

My name is Nikki Claverie and I am the Director of Student Services for North Coast Education Services. We are Northeast Ohios leader in private in-home tutoring services, serving seven Northeast Ohio counties since 1985. We are also statewide providers to the Autism Scholarship and Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship Programs. I understand that you may not be the person I need to speak with, but I hope you can direct me to the right person.

We are currently seeking tutors for a variety of paid tutoring opportunities throughout Lake County. If I send you a description of our current opportunities, would you be able to post it on your job board and pass it along to your members? We are always accepting resumes for tutors. We have several retired teachers who tutor with our company.  They enjoy the flexibility of creating their own schedule and the advantages of working with individual students as opposed to a full class.

Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to speaking with you.

Sincerely,

Nikki Claverie

SALVATION ARMY NEEDS BELL RINGERS AT COLLECTIONS KETTLES

10-04-16

Can you spare a few hours to volunteer to help bell ring for the Salvation Army of Portage County? Three inside places to ring are at the Acme in Kent and the Giant Eagle in Ravenna and in Streetsboro. Other sites are outdoors. Tell them you are with the Portage County Retired Teacher Association, and they will schedule you indoors if that is your request.  Collection begins the day after Thanksgiving and ends until Christmas Eve.

We were informed that $12,000 was collected through the kettle donations last year.  Think how much food and supplies can be given to the needy with that amount of money.   Please call Bonnie Schubert at the Salvation Army office in Ravenna at 330-296-7371 if you can help. Thanks in advance.

Cancer Assistance Volunteer Role, Posted 09/09/2016  American Cancer Society

We are in need of volunteers in Portage County and surrounding areas to help community members in the fight against cancer. This year alone, an estimated 67,000 Ohio residents will learn that they have cancer and many of them will not feel well enough to drive or will not have friends or family available to help get them to their treatment.  A volunteer for Road to Recovery would learn about a patient in their community who has asked for help and could volunteer to pick them up and drive them to their treatment facility.  Every appointment is different so volunteer drivers can chose to donate their time on a case-by-case basis depending on their availability and comfortability.  Volunteers must be between the ages of 18-85 and have: a current, valid driver’s license; access to a safe and reliable vehicle; a good driving record; proof of adequate automobile insurance and willing to complete a training to help prepare for the role.

I would love to share more information with you about this opportunity to put on the website or to speak to your group in person. Please feel free to contact me at this email or at (888) 227 – 6446 x 1106.

Thank you so much,
