50-50 Drawing:  Dan McCombs drew Dave Gynn’s name as the winner of half of the $134 50-50 drawing.  Karen Balog won a gift basket, and several numbers were drawn for the poinsettias which decorated the luncheon tables.

Scholarship Chair Jim Montaquila reported that the committee has been working hard to put together the program for the Scholarship Luncheon. They have made contact with all seven winners and expect that they and their families will attend. He sent out reminder post cards to each. In May Georgia and Jim met at Connie’s house to develop the program. They will have a power point slide show depicting the seven scholarship winners. Because this is a Presidential election year, the theme this year revolves around different Presidents and Presidential candidates. He will be asking each of the scholarship recipients to explain how a quote of one of the Presidents/Presidential candidates can relate to their seeking to become a teacher.

Jim has been a collector of Presidential campaign buttons for almost fifty years. He will bring them for display. Also the committee has developed a Presidential trivia quiz that will be put on the tables for our guests.

Jim also reported that he was alerted by members of the scholarship committee that the Record Courier reported that Steven Joseph Farhat, one of our scholarship recipients, anticipated attending college to become a lawyer. Jim pursued the matter by calling the recipient and Ken and Nancy Bliss, the donors of that scholarship. Steven Joseph said that his intention is to go to Kent State and seek a double major in Pre-Law and Political Science. His goal is to become a Political Science instructor at the college level. Ken and Nancy said they were fine with this. However, Jim thinks the committee should address how to tighten up our application process so that problems could be eliminated in the future. He asked the committee to stay for a short meeting.

She said letters are being mailed to previously retired teachers who have not yet joined PCRTA to encourage them to consider membership. So far I have gone back two years. We are attempting to recruit 50 members this year, and only 27 names of current retirees have been given to us. We are considering a letter to each local teacher’s association president reminding them of our existence and encouraging them to become familiar with ORTA and PCRTA. Legislative Chair Dan McCombs passed along information from STRS Ohio Legislative News.

STRS Ohio learned that legislation aimed at providing assistance to Puerto Rico also contains unrelated provisions related to pensions….alerted STRS Ohio that the pension provisions are effectively the Safe Annuities for Employees (SAFE) Act and the Public Employees Pension Transparency Act (PEPTA). Neither of these bills has been

introduced during this Congress nor have the underlying premises been the subject of public discussion before any Congressional bodies. The SAFE Act would allow state and local governments to provide for yearly annuities for their employees. The    concern is that these annuities would be seen as viable alternatives to the state systems.

Michael J. Nehf, Executive Director of STRS, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader.Mitch McConnell protesting these provisions.

Dan also reported that Carol Kinsey wrote that our pension system and health care are among ORTA top Legislative priorities. STRS is looking very seriously at what needs to be done to maintan quality health care as long as they can. These decisions will be made internally.

Our 50th Anniversary Planning!

We have come a long way in 50 years, and we plan to celebrate our anniversary all year.  Our programs will focus on the history of education in Portage County, and we will look forward to the future in education.  There will be many opportunities for members to engage in the celebration – watch for details in the Desktop newsletter or on our website (www.pcrta.net).

50/50 DRAWINGS TO INCREASE by Dave Gynn

Now you have more reason to participate in the luncheon 50/50 drawings.  We are adding a special gift basket to each drawing.  The first ticket drawn can select the cash or the basket, and the next ticket gets what is left.

The March luncheon will feature a “Cabin Fever” basket – jigsaw puzzles, game, wine, chocolate and a gift certificate.  Increase your chances to win with multiple tickets – one for $1; six for $5; fifteen for $10.  The increase in income for PCRTA will help to pay the additional costs for our 50th anniversary!

DISPLAY MEMBER INTERESTS

To help celebrate our 50th anniversary, we are adding a new feature to our luncheons – member interest displays.  Come to the meetings early to view the collections, art work, travel souvenirs and interests of our members.

Ron Snowberger and Pat Gynn will display their collections at the March luncheon.  Ron has been collecting postage stamps for years.  He will display special commemorative postage stamps and first-day issues, as well as reference materials.  He has several HUGE bins but will display only a small portion.

Pat Gynn will display her fifty favorite frogs. With a classroom theme of “Hop into First Grade,” students, parents and fellow teachers inundated her with many unusual frogs.  She will show off a small part of her collection of stuffed animals, ceramic pieces, books, games and other interesting frogs.

News from the ORTA OFFICE

In compliance with the ACA (affordable Care Act), STRS benefit recipients will begin receiving 1095-B forms next year for the tax year 2015.  The 1095-B form reports each month during the year that minimum essential health care coverage has been provided.   All STRS Ohio plans provided minimal essential coverage, which protects members from having to pay a penalty tax for not having qualified HC coverage.

STRS Ohio’s fully insured plans (Aetna, AultCare, Healthspan & Paramount) are responsible for issuing 1095s for all non-Medicare benefit recipient enrollees.   Medicare benefit recipients enrolled in these plans will receive 1095-B forms from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) of their plan administrators.    Ann W. Hearings are now being held. She feels there is a good chance the formula will be reset. She will keep us informed.  She said ORTA is working hard to keep members informed. The ORTA Website has lots of information. She also said that our Webmaster is doing a good job. She encouraged members to attend the Alliance Spring Conference as there will be an update on health insurance.

Community Chair Judy Morgan reported that our project for May is Big Brothers Big Sisters—gift cards or donations. She urged everyone to report volunteer hours since our goal for 2016 is 50,000 hours as it is the 50th anniversary of PCRTA.

The next social event is April 14 at the Field Restaurant in Brimfield: bingo and lunch 10:00 AM.

PCRTA /ORTA and HABITAT for HUMANITY

by Ron Snowberger

Those of you who were unable to attend the March luncheon missed a super good program.  Diana Zuranski, program manager, and Scott Craven, engineer for Portage County Habitat, presented a power point program and explanation of just what Habitat is, how it functions, what it does, its mission and all the details for providing “a hand up” for local families in need.

As you may remember, in January 2016 ORTA joined forces with Habitat, with all retired teacher organizations participating.  This venture not only lends helping hands to Habitat, but also provides an avenue for PCRTA volunteers to help give a local family “a hand up” as well help us reach the PCRTA goal of 50,000 volunteer hours in 2016.  One purpose of this collaboration is to raise the visibility of ORTA as well as our local chapter, both for attracting new members and for providing a united front to ensure our retirement benefits by keeping the powers that be in Columbus aware of the many contributions and volunteer hours retired teachers give to their communities.

Saturday, April 30, through Sunday, May 8, is WOMEN BUILD WEEK.  So on MAY 3, Habitat will be joined by several PCRTA women (men are welcome also) along with Carol Remington, ORTA President to help restore a small home on Lincoln Street in Ravenna.  WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO HELP?  PLEASE SAY YES!  For more details you can contact Diana Zuranski at 330-296-2880 or Ron Snowberger at 330-678-3268.

Please visit the PCRTA web site to explore the many ways you can give (from time, to donations, to gifts, to expertise) to Habitat for Humanity.  So many community members have no idea what PCRTA is or does…..help us to change that…..awareness and communication with PCRTA will benefit everyone.
