At the July meeting, he will give a copy of Ted Seidel’s book, Who Stole My Pension?, to anyone who donates $10 to the Scholarship Fund.
Chris then introduced the speaker, Dr. Robin Rayfield, who began by saying ORTA came through the pandemic in good shape with 630 new members. Total donations amounted to $90,000. Donations not needed for the audit will be placed into the ORTA Foundation.
Dr. Rayfield reported on some of the information revealed by the audit. One-third of the pension funds is invested in 134 alternative investments, such as hedge funds, real estate, etc. A half-billion dollars was invested in Panda Power, which went bankrupt in 2017. STRS called this an insignificant loss. The question is how much is in each alternative investment, and what are they worth today? STRS will not give that information, forcing Ted Seidel to bring a lawsuit against them. There are now STRS Board members asking questions on our behalf. The report will be available to STRS and shared with the legislature and the general public.
Chris thanked Dr. Rayfield for his presentation and enlightening answers to attendees’ questions.
Tech Chair Connie Evans said she would like to welcome everyone to visit the PCRTA website. Membership Chair Judy Hendershot plans to use her private Facebook page to put the word out about PCRTA and suggested everyone do this to advertise PCRTA and encourage membership. Reservations Chair Karen Balog plans to research online registration for our luncheons. Carol Kinsey reported that only two chapters out of the 18 in Northeast Ohio have resumed in- person meetings. Possible venues for our future meetings were discussed. The info gathered needs to be written, preferably in a grid form so all places and their info can be seen together. The consensus was to do the best we can and find a place that is handicap accessible, affordable, centrally located, and has audio/visual capabilities.
ORTA Trustee, Helena Parry said if you are not getting the quarterly newsletter by email, contact ORTA.
Dave Gynn reported on the 5 year strategic plan with ORTA. There was lots of brainstorming of changes, with an ultimate decision coming by their October 2017 meeting.
President’s Report: Helena Parry filed the annual chapter report online.
Committee Reports:
*Archival: The newsletters that Pat Gynn had reported missing have been located. All newsletters from 1991 – 1999 are in the archives. More clippings and pictures were received from Winona Vannoy, PCRTA president in 1993, ‘94, and ’95, and District 11 Director from 1995-1996. The scrapbook for the 50th anniversary luncheon is completed. After Pat goes through the last 4 old scrapbooks and miscellaneous clippings and pages, the finished materials will go to the Portage County Historical Society when they reopen at the end of January.
*Community Services: Judy Morgan is still talking to organizations to determine what their needs are. In March, we will collect cleaning supplies, hand sanitizers, and paper products for the Portage County Clothing Center.
*Legislative: Dan McCombs reported that HB 520, which contains many items requested by the five retirement systems, is now awaiting Governor Kasich’s signature. It is important that we get involved with this year’s presidential secretary appointments. Dan recommended, with the board’s approval, that we, as individuals, not as PCRTA, become active and take a stand. We need to contact Lamar Alexander to protest and vote no for Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, by going to the website for US Senate. Click on state of Tennessee. Go to senate. Click on Lamar Alexander and leave a message. Again, not as PCRTA, we should text or email our senators Sherrod Brown and Ron Portman.
*Membership: Judy Hendershot said we have 395 members in both PCRTA and ORTA. Three hundred eight are life members. Judy would like to set up a closed Facebook page for members so more communication can occur. She would like to do a survey of how many members use Facebook.
*Memorial/Sunshine: Judy Hendershot needs all names of those who passed away in 2016 and Connie Evans will do a power point presentation for the March Luncheon meeting.
*Proctoring: Edie Scott reported good news: Six people will be trained on January 25 to become proctors. The bad news: testing schedules came out, but response has been slow.
*Newsletter info is due by February 1, 2017.
*Nominations: The President needs to be replaced ASAP. The Vice President and the Recording Secretary are the positions to be replaced for 2018.
*Pre-Retirement Workshop will be held in 2018. A committee is needed and Denise Craig will ask Dick Ruch if he would like to attend some board meetings to learn more about how the board works and to see if he would be interested in helping to set up this committee.
*Protective Services: Kay Wise reported that the first AARP Smart Driver Program is February 16, 2017. Call 330-633-5610 to make a reservation, and Kay Wise at 330-297-1110 for questions.
*Public Relations: Georgia Darrah reported that all items submitted to the Record Courier in 2016 were published in the paper. Georgia also sent some items to ORTA, which were published in the quarterly newsletter.
*Reservations: Karen Balog is waiting for the info: where, when, and cost of March’s Luncheon meeting.
*Social/Travel: John Kerstetter reported very low attendance at all events, with usually about half being committee members. His committee has tried surveys, newsletter and verbal announcements, fliers, and is unsure what to do next. The committee will meet on February 2 at 12:00 at Panera Bread in Stow. Suggestions include sending emails, doing a bus trip.
*Telephone/Communications: chair resigned; committee is no longer necessary.
*Webmaster: Connie Evans gave evidence as to why her budgeted allowance is going from $200 in 2016 to $650 in 2017. The costs for 2017 include Sitelock Fix – $103.99 (for 2016, but paid this January), The One Plan – $466.20 (36 months), Domain Privacy $13.99 (for 2017), Sitelock Fix – $103.99 (for 2017), and Domain Name – $35.98 (for 2 years).
*Habitat for Humanity: Ron Snowberger said that due to lack of interest, it will not be done this year.
The meeting adjourned at 11:41.
Respectfully submitted by Denise Craig for Carole Stokes.
PCRTA Luncheon Meeting: December 15, 2016
Greetings: President Helena Parry opened the meeting and led the group in the pledge to the flag. She thanked Kay Wise and Pat Gynn for acting as greeters.
Music: Len Suzelis played his guitar and led the group in singing “Silver Bells” accompanied by a video presentation of pictures and lyrics.
Thank you Letter: President Helena read a Christmas card from Matt Leedom, who prints our newsletter, thanking us for our years of printing with him. Matt also brought some cookies as a treat for attendees.
Thank you for Board Members and Chairs: President Helena Parry asked the Board Members and Chair of the PCRTA Committees to come forward to be recognized and presented them with gift bags thanking them for their service to the group.
Committee Reports:
Proctoring: Edith Scott thanked the people who had served as NEOMED Proctors this year. She announced that there will be a training class on January 25 or February 22 at 10 am for new proctors. She asked people who wished to become proctors to sign up with her and tell which date was best for them.
Legislative Update: Dan McCombs said that Carol Kinsey, our District Director, requested that we circulate a petition for Rita J. Walters from Powhatan who is running for the STRS board. Each person who is running needs to acquire signatures from different parts of the state to be put on the ballot.
Community Services: Judy Morgan thanked members for bringing hats, gloves and scarves to be donated to the County Clothing Center. She circulated a paper for people to report their volunteer hours. She also asked for suggestions for any new groups that may need our help in 2017.
Membership: Dave Gynn reported for Judy Hendershot that everyone at the luncheon had renewed their membership for 2017, but there are still 60 members who have not renewed. He asked for volunteers to call the people on this list to ask them to renew.
Social Committee: John Kerstetter reported that a group of members was going to attend the Western Reserve Holiday Band Concert at the Congregational Church in Hudson on Sunday, December 18th at 4:00 pm, and then meet for dinner at Zeppe’s on Darrow Road following the concert.
Meditation: Georgia Darrah presented the Meditation about a writing task a professor asked of his class to tell about a paper that had a black dot in the center of the page. Each student wrote about the dot. The professor pointed out that they had focused on the dot, which was a small part of the page and they ignored the white area. We should focus on the big picture in life rather than focusing on the occasional dark spots.
50-50 Drawing: Dan McCombs drew Dave Gynn’s name as the winner of half of the $134 50-50 drawing. Karen Balog won a gift basket, and several numbers were drawn for the poinsettias which decorated the luncheon tables.
Luncheon: President Helena thanked Guido’s for the Italian Feast they had prepared.
Program Entertainment: The Coventry High School Chamber Ensemble sang an outstanding program of Christmas music under the direction of Julie Strebler, who is the daughter of PCRTA member Marlene Strebler. They received a standing ovation for their wonderful presentation.
