We have successfully completed the first semester for 2021-2022! Now, as February approaches, we are gearing up for the Spring semester. Thanks to our dedicated proctors, I have been able to assign and complete the February test dates. However, I will be in need of many more proctors for the months of April, May and June as there are many scheduled tests for those months. I will be calling you to see your availability for those months, or you can call or text me (330-608-3764) to let me know when you can proctor. NEOMED is planning a Proctor Appreciation event for the end of May. Further details will be forthcoming. GREETINGS PCRTA MEMBERS,
I pray that all of you have been keeping healthy, both in mind and in spirit, during these last several months of COVID. Although COVID – 19 is not yet behind us, the emergence of vaccines and the signs of spring bring hope of better days ahead.
During the March Executive Board meeting, we discussed the strong possibility of resuming our proctor program beginning in the fall 2021 semester (beginning August 9th). So that we can move forward with planning for our participation, please e-mail me at jdnolte@windstream.net or call me at 330-608-3764 to let me know if you would be interested in proctoring. NEOMED misses our collaborative involvement, and they will eagerly and gratefully welcome us back with open arms.
Throughout the pandemic, I have maintained communication with NEOMED regarding our status and theirs. Sadly, Sara Adair, our NEOMED Proctor Liaison, has moved on to other opportunities. Terri Robinson, PhD, Executive Director of Academic & Library Services, will be assuming Sara’s duties as testing coordinator. Dr. Robinson assures me that NEOMED will continue to comply with and follow all safety protocols, including mask wearing, maintaining 6’ distancing and limiting the number of students per classroom.

Hello, Fellow Proctors,
Thank you all for your input into the postponement of the Proctor Program during this time of COVID. Your honest, thoughtful comments were greatly appreciated. I spoke to Sara regarding our decision to not return for the Fall Semester. She understood the necessity for our membership to remain safe and was supportive of the idea of reevaluating later. She also reiterated that we will always be welcomed back and expressed NEOMED’s commitment to our partnership.

Our spring exams are now underway, and April has most definitely come in like a lion! During the first week alone, there was a need for 24 proctors. I can’t begin to thank all of you who continue to contribute to our Proctor Program with the gift of your time. There is a continuous outpouring of appreciation from the staff at NEOMED for our WIN/WIN collaboration.
With that said, we continue to need and welcome new proctors in order to keep this program going. We recently added two additional proctors but still have a need for many more. Thanks to Dave Spencer and Cindy Trocchio for stepping forward to join the proctor team.

Greetings Proctors,
Rosemary Hostler and I are pleased to accept the Proctor responsibilities as NEOMED coordinators. Edith has left big shoes to fill with this responsibility, but we will do our utmost to carry on this wonderful, long established program. We met recently at Edie’s house, and she has been showing us the “ins and outs” of scheduling and sharing her expertise. Thanks so much, Edie, for what you have done in the past and the support you will offer in the future, as we navigate our way around everything.
The schedules are mailed and/or were distributed at our last meeting. There are a couple of things to emphasize:
- Please review the schedule and contact me (Jean Nolte) at 330-608-3764 or at jdnolte@windstream.net, as soon as you can. It’s important that we provide NEOMED the names of those who will be proctoring for each testing session, well ahead of the session.
- If you need to cancel, please contact me immediately so that I can find a substitute for you. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT NEOMED DIRECTLY.
As always, whether you are a seasoned or a new Proctor, thank you for your commitment and gift of time.

2018 Proctoring Reception
North Eastern Ohio Medical University honored Portage County Retired Teachers whoproctor tests for the university at a gathering on May 24 at 10a.m. at NEOMED.
Susan Hricko from NEOMED who is retiring was honored at the reception.
The PCRTA proctors collected money to buy Suzan two generous gift cards to local gardening centers.
PCRTA member and chair of scheduling, Edith Scott, was also honored by PCRTA members for her eleven years of scheduling proctors for our NEOMED Project. Edith is retiring from scheduling and was given a generous amount of cash collected by PCRTA proctors.
The reception featured a presentation by Dr. Christine Crish Ph.D. She is working at NEOMED in research on bone loss and its correlation to Alzheimer’s. She stated that early detection is needed as we find 5.7 million people in the U. S. have Alzheimer’s. Less than 5% of it is caused by determinant genes. She reported that some risk factors for the disease include previous brain injury, being female, older age, high blood pressure, sedentary life style, depression, diet, lack of exercise and high cholesterol.
NEOMED contributes significantly to the PCRTA Future Teachers Scholarship Fund. This year seven Portage high school graduates, who intend to major in education, will each receive a $1,500 scholarship.
This year our proctors proctored 114 tests which took 326 proctor positions equaling 913 hours which was handled by 43 different proctors. Denise Craig topped the group with 74.5 hours of proctoring.

NorthEastern Ohio Medical University honored Portage County Retired Teachers who proctor tests for the university at a gathering on May 25. The celebration recognized ten years of collaboration between the university and retired teachers.
Dr. Richard Kasmer, Vice Dean of the School of Pharmacy, informed the group of the school’s progress. The School of Pharmacy is ranked 4th in the nation and is the highest ranked school in Ohio. He answered many interesting questions from retired teachers.
Featured speaker, Dr.Hans Thewissen, Anatomy Professor, gave a fascinating report on his archeological expeditions and the discovery of early whales that walked. He brought artifacts from his travels and described future expeditions. The university has a replica of the skeleton of the early whale and recently adopted the Walking Whale as the university mascot.
Suzanne Hricko, chief proctor administrator, and Edith Scott, retired teacher scheduler, praised and thanked the proctors. This year 317 people proctored 116 tests volunteering over 900 hours. Ron Snowberger proctored 89.75 hours, and Denise Craig volunteered 80.75. They were awarded hanging flower baskets. Richard Brockett and Wendy Cooley won copies of Dr. Thewissen’s book, The Walking Whales. Joann McEwen and Kathy Stemen won gift cards.

PCRTA PROCTORS VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION PROGRAM AT NORTHEAST OHIO MEDICAL UNIVERSITY (NEOMED):
On June 18, 2015, NEOMED provided a breakfast reception for the PCRTA Proctors. Altaf Darvesh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, was the main speaker.
His topics included, “Herbal Products and Nutraceuticals: Current Trends.” He gave many suggestions about herbal supplements which could benefit ones health but warned against taking them without your physician knowing since some could interfere with the purpose of prescription drugs.
Those in attendance appreciated his unique sense of humor and knowledge and enjoyed the morning.

47 tests were proctored from September 2013- December 2013. One hundred thirty-three proctor sessions were necessary to complete the 47 tests. The proctors volunteered 412 hours during the above mentioned time period. Thanks so much to all of our proctors. Without this volunteer service we would not have an ample scholarship fund.

You, too, could join the ranks of these proctors, help work with the next generation of doctors and pharmacists and help earn money for PCRTA’s Scholarship Fund. You do not need to be a teacher in order to proctor, BUT you do need to attend an orientation and training session before you start proctoring. 05-16-13 NEOMED HOLDS FIRST ANNUAL PROCTOR APPRECIATION RECEPTION
NEOMED and PCRTA members have had a wonderful working relationship over the past 6-7 years. NEOMED needed proctors for the medical students’ tests, and PCRTA was looking for a way to earn money for our annual future teacher scholarships. It was a perfect match. NEOMED’s Suzanne Hricko and PCRTA’S Edith Scott have worked together seamlessly. Suzanne gives Edith the schedule of tests, and Edith calls to match proctors to the schedule. NEOMED has given money to our scholarship fund commensurate with the number of hours proctored. Starting out with 500 hours for the first two years, then growing to 750 hours with the addition of the School of Pharmacy, and now up to 900 hours as the University has grown. In general, proctoring funds six $1000 scholarships each year. On May 16, NEOMED held it’s First Annual Proctor Appreciation Reception. Many of the 40+ proctors attended the reception. Stephanie Lammlein, Director of the BIO-MED Academy gave an enthusiastic presentation and answered the many questions the proctors had for her. What a wonderful opportunity for students interested in the medical field to be able to use the boundless, diverse resources available to them at NEOMED. Light refreshments were served and the proctors received blue bags with the logo of the new mascot for NEOMED-“Nate, the Walking Whale,” who was just introduced on May 8, 2013. Mary Evelyn Shabino and Kay Wise had their names drawn and received gas cards as a thank you.
03-24-13 NEOMED + PCRTA = A Great Team
Who knew that when PCRTA started the relationship with NEOMED (then NEOUCOM) to provide proctors for the tests administered by the school, that it would prove to be a benefit for both groups? How proud we are to be able to provide the funds to expand the number of scholarships awarded by PCRTA to high school graduates in Portage County going into the field of education. In 2007, at the start of the project, 19 members signed on to be proctors. We met at NEOUCOM for orientation and to become familiar with the duties of a proctor. That number gradually grew to between 40 and 44 proctors in 2012. In 2008, the first full year, 61 tests were administered by 150 proctors and who totaled 462 hours of volunteerism. Increased enrollment at the school meant more tests. In 2012, 105 tests were monitored by 300 proctors and totaling 900.5 testing hours. Wow! 900 hours! Thank you, thank you, thank you to the people who are willing to donate their time to support such a worthy effort. Neither poor parking, cold weather, early hours or mud will stay these volunteers from their promised duties. You can see that there is room for many more people to help with this project. New Proctor Orientation Meeting
9:30 to 11:30 Wednesday, August 22, 2012 NEOMED Office of Academic Affairs Please call Edith Scott to register 330-297-1812 June-July 2012 “Portage County Teachers: Our Most Valuable Employees” This was the title of an article that appeared in NEOMED’s newsletter THE DISPATCH from the division of Academic Affairs, Volume 1, Issue 2, February 2012. Here’s what the article said: Did you know that since May 2007, NEOMED exams have been proctored? Thanks to members of the Portage County Retired Teachers Association (PCRTA) (http:www.pcrta.net) we are able to accomplish this directive. This represents quite a change from the past when students adhered to an honor code, and staff members were present only for logistical/exam administration issues. The volunteer arrangement is a win/win situation for both groups. The volunteers bring a wealth of experience and varied personalities to the position and provide a valuable service to the University and its students. In return NEOMED is a major contributor to their scholarship fund. Raising money for scholarships to promote the teaching profession is one of the primary purposes of the organization, and they do this with fund-raising efforts, contributions from members, interest on investments and the volunteer program at NEOMED. The contributions that NEOMED has made to the PCRTA during the past five years has helped the scholarship program grow from three $500 scholarships in 2007 to six $1,000 scholarships in 2011. Arranging for proctors for the many exams that are administered is a cooperative effort between Edith Scott, long-time PCRTA member and volunteer coordinator for the PCRTA, and Suzanne Hricko, who coordinates exam administration in Academic Affairs. Currently there are 35-40 active volunteer proctors. During the 2011 academic year, the retired teachers proctored 105 exams, totaling 781.5 volunteer hours. Hricko believes the teachers enjoy coming to the College and working with the students, and the Academic Affairs staff definitely appreciate their efforts. Hricko claims, “I don’t know what we would do without them.” And…what would we do without NEOMED! November-December 2011 NEOMED PROCTORS NEEDED
Edith Scott who is in charge of PCRTA’s NEOMED Proctoring Program is looking for more members who are willing to proctor tests for the medical and pharmacy students at NEOMED. Proctors work in groups of two or three along with some full-time NEOMED staff to help monitor the students as they take tests. Most of the tests are taken on computers, but you don’t have to be computer savvy to proctor. There are NEOMED tech people on hand to assist. You will receive a proctor training session before you begin to proctor. Call Edie Scott for more information at 330-297-1812 or see her at the luncheon meeting.
